How to decode gematria

Gematria is an ancient form of interpretation of numbers and letter combinations found in both the Bible and other ancient texts. It is often used as a way of uncovering hidden meanings in sacred scriptures, as well as providing insight into deeper spiritual truths. Decoding gematria involves analyzing the numerical value assigned to each letter of the alphabet, then interpreting the meaning behind each combination. Here is a guide on how to decode gematria.

To begin, familiarize yourself with the numerical values assigned to each Hebrew letter. The values range from 1-400 and symbolize different words, ideas and spiritual concepts. For example, Aleph (א) has a value of 1, Beth (ב) has a value of 2 and so on. Additionally, there are several other symbols which possess different values: vav (ו), ayin (ע) and yud (י). Note that these symbols may also appear in combination with other letters for certain words.

Once you have an understanding of the numerical values associated with each letter, you can begin to decode gematria. Take any word or phrase from either a Jewish or Hebrew text and calculate its numerical value by adding up the individual letters' numerical values; this sum constitutes the kabbalistic meaning behind that phrase or word. For instance, take "Shalom" (שלום). This word's value is Mem-Lamed-Vav-Shin which adds up to 358; 358 symbolizes peace or harmony according to Gematria's interpretation. Alternatively, you can analyze specific word combinations by subtracting the first number from the second—this can help reveal more subtle symbolic meanings behind those specific words or phrases (e.g., IsH – Vav + Shin yields 400 – 6 + 400 = 794).

In addition to this form of decoding using simple mathematics, one can also analyze Gematria using permutations—i.e., taking a single word/phrase but rearranging its letters in any given order and seeing what different numerical values come out. For example, "Shalom" could be rearranged into "losham" which carries with it an entirely new meaning: 912 which means "peaceful dwelling place" according to Gematria interpretations!
